Queen’s Speech 2009

If we are to believe Lord Mandelson’s view that Labour are the political underdogs now, they didn’t put up much of a fight in today’s Queen’s Speech. Setting out its final legislative programme before the General Election was a fine opportunity to demonstrate the New Labour project still has the ideas and energy for reform whilst also laying some political traps for the Conservatives. Neither came to real fruition, and there was little to cause headaches for Tory strategists. Unless Labour really has run out of ideas it would seem that their strategy is to hold on to them until the Pre Budget Report, the Budget and the election campaign ahead.
