London Luton Airport

Engaging government on the airport’s capacity needs, the challenge for LLA was to convince the Government not to call in the planning application for the expansion of the terminal at the airport. Lansons advised the airport that it must undertake a period of political engagement in order to put its case across for the need for further capacity at the airport. We therefore set about creating a targeted engagement programme, arranging meetings with both Government ministers and parliamentarians whose constituencies would be effected by a call-in decision.

Lansons also ensured that it worked with LLAOL’s largest customer, Easyjet, in order to create a co-ordinated campaign, as well as the airports media agency. Furthermore, Lansons set up monitoring for key issues surrounding airport capacity policy in the UK (i.e. the Davies Commission), so that it could keep the client abreast of key developments.

After months of engagement with Government, Lansons finally got the confirmation that the planning application would not be called in. Lansons continues to work with the airport for its subsequent challenge which is to ensure that the ‘non call-in’ decision is not judicially reviewed, but also continue to advise LLA and its owners on all external relations activity.
